During our recent meeting to discuss animal intelligence, Eve mentioned elephants communicating over large distances by transmitting and receiving low-frequency waves through their skeletons and feet. Exobiology – Would physics constrain evolution to yield similar organisms everywhere?

Charles Cockell’s The Equations of Life: How Physics Shapes Evolution argues physics sets the boundaries and shape possibilities for what evolution can produce in the universe. Read a review here. Chapter by chapter, he aims his lens at all levels of biological organization, from the molecular machinery of electron transport to the social organisms formed by ant colonies. In each instance, Cockell shows that although these structures might be endless in their detail, they are bounded in their form.

There are some open source and free textbooks online that are good background resources for our group. The British Columbia’s BCCampus OpenEd is a good entry point for discovering free digital textbooks written by higher education faculty. For example, the Social Psychology title touches on several topics we often hit on, such as in-/out-group dynamics. Another good source is OpenStax. If you find other good resources, especially at low or no cost, please share their links.

Two independent teams of scientists from the University of Utah and the University of Massachusetts Medical School have discovered that a gene crucial for learning, called Arc, can send its genetic material from one neuron to another by employing a strategy commonly used by viruses. Fast mapping technique will revolutionize brain research

Tony Zador of Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory devised a new technique for mapping connections among neurons. It is much faster than other methods and at least as accurate as the most accurate competing methods, including fluorescence techniques.
